16/07/2006 - World Record Breaking Abseil
It’s hard to believe that the Humber Bridge has been open for 25 years, and to celebrate this momentous occasion there were a series of spectacular events taking place in and around the Bridge from 13 – 16 July.
Not only was there a concert by the wonderful Katherine Jenkins supported by the Band of the Royal Marines, but also:-
Live Music from Local Acts
Live Comedy, Magic and Theatre
Live Games and Competitions
Funfairs on both sides of the Humber
The UK’s highest reverse bungee
Helicopter trips to view the Humber Estuary and other landmarks
Hot Air Balloon Rides
Royal Marine Zip Line from the Bridge to the foreshore 120 feet below
a firework extravaganza
As part of these celebrations, the Royal Marines offered 200 brave members of the public and select celebrities, including local MP David Davies, with a unique opportunity to abseil down the Birds Eye North Tower and Grimsby Institute South Tower of the Humber Bridge.
The towers are a staggering 155.5m (over 500 feet) high with awesome views and for the first and only time ever, members of the public were able to participate in an abseil of 380 feet to the bridge surface below. This was a world record for the highest abseil from a concrete structure to be open to members of the public.
Lynne and Nick Gale of Gale Consulting completed training with HM Royal Marines and prepared themselves both mentally and physically for the challenge. Due to high winds and resulting technical difficulties, their abseils from the North Tower of the Humber Bridge were postponed to Sunday 16 July.
Why?
Because we can!! but of course there has to be another reason and we thought that raising money for two worthy local causes is reason enough. We are therefore delighted to raise funds for Dove House Hospice in Hull, and also North Ferriby Methodist Church which we feel are two excellent and worthy causes.
